What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a mental state achieved by focusing awareness on the present moment. In everyday life, mindfulness is about learning to direct our attention to our experience as it unfolds, rather than being ruled by our thoughts. Stress and strain of life can result in us feeling caught up in a constant stream of thoughts, feelings and emotions, reflecting on past issues and/or feeling overwhelmed by future worry and anxieties. Mindfulness aims to achieve a relaxed, non-judgemental awareness of thoughts, feelings and sensations. Mindfulness can help us to understand ourselves better, enjoy life more and achieve a sense of wellbeing.

What is Mindfulness therapy used for:

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is an approach to psychotherapy that was originally created as a relapse-prevention treatment for depression. Mindfulness and mindfulness meditation focus on becoming aware of all incoming thoughts and feelings and accepting them, but not attaching or reacting to them.

Can Mindfulness help depression?

A new study from the University of Oxford finds that mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT) is just as effective as antidepressants for preventing a relapse of depression. They also explore a greater awareness of their own body, identifying stress and signs of depression before a crisis hits.
